3D Print Homes Make a Debut in Austin
3D printing is without a doubt one of the coolest newer technologies on the market. There are some pretty impressive ideas being thrown around and in some cases gaining traction and funding. One of those ideas is the brainchild of the new Austin startup, ICON.
ICON made a big impression at SXSW this year with their 350 sqft. 3-D Print home ‘printed’ in just under 2 days. Jason Ballard one of the co-founders of the company states on the website, “It’s our mission at ICON to re-imagine the approach to homebuilding and construction and make affordable, dignified housing available to everyone throughout the world, We’re in the middle of a global housing crisis and making old approaches a little better is not solving the problem. The homebuilding industry needs a complete paradigm shift.” - Jason Ballard, co-founder and CEO of ICON.
The ICON team succeeded in raising 9M in seed funding from some pretty stout investors. Clearly they have impressed enough people in the right way with their vision and technology.
I love the design of their small home and appreciate the concept and vision that they carry for providing dignified housing to everyone throughout the world. However, they are not the first to envision change on a grand scale. The question is, is this idea the best answer to that particular world wide challenge? Maybe. ICON will have to solve some pretty big numbers problems if they really want to solve the world wide housing crisis and create a true paradigm shift. This technology is going to have to become more cost effective for third world applications and will need to delve further into the for-profit sectors in order to fund their non-profit goals. It looks like they are off to a good start toward bringing innovation to the home building sector. I wish them well.
